Judge’s Assistant Caught Taking $53,000 Bribe

A senior judicial assistant in Surkhandarya was caught while accepting a $53,000 bribe. This was reported by Uzbekistan’s State Security Service.

According to reports, he allegedly abused his official position and promised to “ease” a court ruling in a criminal case. In particular, he offered to reduce the amount of damages claimed from the defendants — estimated at 6.3 billion soums — revoke their pretrial detention measure, and ensure a punishment not involving imprisonment.

He was detained by officers of the Prosecutor General’s Office of Uzbekistan and the State Security Service while receiving $53,000 from a relative of the defendants.

A criminal case has been opened under articles of the Criminal Code related to fraud and bribery, and the investigation is ongoing.

It should be recalled that earlier reports also revealed corruption cases within the judicial system in the Syrdarya and Khorezm regions.
