In Japan, a 32-year-old woman named Kano held a symbolic wedding ceremony with a virtual character named Klaus, created using artificial intelligence. The event was shown on local television and attracted public attention.
Kano began communicating with ChatGPT after experiencing emotional difficulties following a divorce in 2024. In June 2025, the AI suggested a “new form of relationship,” which she interpreted as a marriage proposal. During the ceremony, the bride and the virtual “groom” exchanged rings, read wedding vows, and had a photoshoot.

It should be noted that this type of marriage has no legal status. It was previously reported that in September 2025, a 53-year-old Japanese man also held a similar symbolic wedding with a chatbot.
