Janitor Mistakenly Cleans Off a 40-Year-Old Artwork in Taiwan Museum

An unusual incident took place at the Keelung Art Museum in Taiwan, where a volunteer janitor accidentally destroyed a 40-year-old installation by contemporary artist Chen Sung-chih, mistaking it for a dirty mirror.

The piece, titled “Inverted Syntax-16,” featured a dust-covered mirror mounted on a wooden panel — a symbolic reflection on time, memory, and cultural identity. However, when the janitor wiped away the dust with toilet paper, the artwork lost its entire conceptual meaning.

The museum has issued an official apology to the artist and announced that compensation will be provided for the damage. Interestingly, some art critics have suggested that the incident itself has given the work a new artistic meaning — turning it into a reflection on impermanence and reinterpretation in art.
