Jakarta bans dog, cat, and bat meat

The capital of Indonesia, Jakarta, has officially banned the sale and consumption of dog, cat, and bat meat in order to prevent rabies. The law was signed on November 24 by the city’s governor, Pramono Anung, and will come into force in six months.

According to the new regulation, violators will receive a written warning, and in repeated cases, their business licenses may be revoked. Indonesia was one of the few countries that allowed the trade of such meat, but in recent years, pressure from animal rights activists has increased.

According to the WHO, deaths from rabies are recorded in Indonesia every year. Therefore, the new decision is considered an important measure aimed at protecting public health.
