The Fatwa Center under the Muslim Office of Uzbekistan has announced that it is not permissible to receive fatwas or Sharia rulings on religious questions from artificial intelligence tools, including ChatGPT.

The official statement notes that such technologies may be useful in some areas, but cannot be a reliable source in Sharia matters. Because they are created by humans and can often give approximate or unsourced answers to religious questions.

“Therefore, religious questions should be directed only to people of knowledge - that is, expert scholars,” the Fatwa Center says in a statement.
