Karim Bahriyev, a well-known journalist, writer, translator, former deputy, member of parliament and politician, said in the “Lolazor” podcast that the first president of Uzbekistan, Islam Karimov, wanted to give his daughter, Gulnara Karimova, to him, but she refused. “I don’t know why that man fell in love with me. I refused, because I said, ‘I’m marrying a girl from Tashkent, Islam Abduganievich,’” Bahriyev said. He also said that he didn’t tell anyone about this for 30 years, and that Islam Karimov blessed him with the words, “Okay, be happy. If I go to your wedding, my guards will ruin your wedding.”
After that, Gulnara Karimova married American businessman Mansur Maqsudi. They lived together for 10 years and then divorced.
Gulnara Karimova was sentenced to 5 years in prison in 2015, and 13 years and 4 months in 2019.
