Iraq’s parliament has elected a new head of state.
Following a vote in the Iraqi parliament, Nizar Omedi, a representative of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), was elected President of the country.
The election process was complicated. In the first round, none of the candidates secured the required number of votes. In the second round, Nizar Omedi defeated his main rival and won by a majority vote.
Before the election, the incumbent president Abdul Latif Rashid withdrew his candidacy.
According to the law, the new president must assign a prime minister-designate to form a government within 15 days.
