France has ordered Apple to stop selling iPhone 12 models because they emit too much electromagnetic radiation. On September 12, the French National Frequency Agency (ANFR) decided to temporarily ban the sale of Apple's iPhone 12 smartphones in the country. This is stated in the message published on the ANFR website.

ANFR has advised Apple to recall all iPhone 12 units sold in the country if the problem is not resolved through a software update.

Earlier, the World Health Organization tried to suppress concerns about the radiation emitted by mobile phones. According to the WHO website, there is no evidence to conclude that low-level electromagnetic fields are harmful to humans.

The iPhone 12 was first released in September 2020 and is still available worldwide.

Apple is contesting ANFR's investigation, noting that the company has submitted to the regulator the results of laboratory tests it and third parties conducted. It says that the iPhone 12 is recognized as compliant with radiation levels around the world.

French Minister of Digital Technologies Jean-Noel Barro explained the decision to ban the sale of the iPhone 12 because the level of radiation in the iPhone 12 is above the acceptable limit. According to him, the ANFR found that the SAR level of the iPhone 12 (the indicator that determines the energy of the electromagnetic field absorbed by the tissues of the human body in one second) is higher than legally allowed.

"We expect Apple to respond within two weeks," he said. "If not, I would like to issue instructions to recall the iPhone 12s in circulation as well. The rules are the same for everyone. The government will not compromise. Every company must follow them, and Apple is no exception."

According to ANFR, the SAR of the device is 5.7 watts per kilogram, and the maximum allowed in the European Union is 4 watts per kilogram.
