The Indian space agency has successfully launched a rocket that will take a lander to the south pole of the Moon.

The Chandrayaan-3 mission lifted off at 14:35 local time from the main Sriharikota spaceport in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh on an LVM3 rocket.

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has confirmed that the spacecraft has successfully entered Earth's orbit. After a series of carefully planned maneuvers, the spacecraft is expected to land near the south pole of the Moon on August 23.

The successful landing will make India the fourth country after the US, the former Soviet Union and China to land a probe on the Moon and the first to do so near the Moon's south pole.
