In Uzbekistan, criminal liability is established for extortion over the Internet

At the meeting of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis, the draft law "On amendments and additions to the Criminal and Criminal Procedure Codes of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Code of Administrative Responsibility of the Republic of Uzbekistan" was considered. This was reported by the press service of the lower house of the parliament.

It is noted that today, using the Internet, people's mobile devices and accounts and channels in social networks and messengers can be blocked by sending malware, delete, change or remove their data. There are cases of threatening, demanding money or demanding other material benefits.

Also, in the space of digital technologies, cases of illegal crypto-asset circulation, anonymous crypto-asset mining, and changing the international unique identification code of a mobile device without the permission of the legal manufacturer are increasing.

With the proposed bill, criminal liability for engaging in online extortion, illegal crypto-assets circulation and mining, and changing the international unique identification code of a mobile device without the permission of the legal manufacturer, as well as the development of special programs for this purpose, o Administrative liability is determined for their transfer or use.

According to the initiators of the law, those involved in the circulation and mining of illegal crypto-assets will be exempted from criminal liability if they voluntarily reported about the crime being prepared or committed and actively helped to solve it.

During the discussions, the deputies made a number of reasonable proposals for further improvement and refinement of the draft law. Various questions were raised regarding some norms in the project and detailed answers were received from officials. After heated debates, the deputies considered the necessity of the bill and accepted it in the first reading.

Extortion cases by distributing personal information of others

At the end of July, a girl who had an affair with a man and demanded a phone in exchange for not revealing it to her husband was arrested in the city of Bukhara.
In May, a man was arrested in Tashkent who demanded money from a woman saying that he would show her photos and videos to her husband and father-in-law.
It was reported that a young man who threatened to distribute photos of a 19-year-old girl was caught in Tashkent region.
