In Pattaya, Thailand, a bakery has attracted huge attention with its unusual “hairy croissants.” The pastries are topped with black strands that resemble hair or fur. In reality, these strands are edible seaweed called fat choy, commonly used in Asian cuisine. According to the baker, the slightly salty flavor of the seaweed blends perfectly with the sweet cream inside the croissant, creating a distinctive taste. The idea originated as a joke when a customer asked for a “hairy cake” for a friend. After the cake went viral on social media, the bakery adapted the concept to croissants.
