This was announced during a press conference following the results of the first half of 2023, the head of the Local Development Committee Sharifjon Jumazoda.

In total, the changes will affect more than 4.8 thousand geographical entities and cities of Tajikistan.

The reason for this decision of the authorities called the discrepancy with the language standard.

Meanwhile, Jumazoda did not specify when the name change would begin or what exactly the differences were.

As Gavkhar Sharofzoda, who previously held the position of chairman of the Committee on Language and Terminology under the Government of Tajikistan, reported, the norms for pronunciation and spelling of geographical names in Tajikistan will be fixed by a special catalog.

This decision was made after complaints about the distorted pronunciation of geographical features coming from indigenous people, which help the committee to establish the correct origin of words.
