In the city of Kumomoto, robots attend classes instead of absent students. They are equipped with a tablet, and a student who does not come to class connects to the robot with his computer and participates in the class online.
Schools in Kumomoto are starting to use robots to combat truancy. In school classrooms in the city, robots equipped with microphones and cameras will start attending classes instead of students from November. It is planned to have 2 robots in the classrooms.

Teachers conduct lessons in classrooms as usual. During the lesson, 1 meter high self-controlling robots sit with the students. A student who does not come to school connects to robots with tablets installed from his computer and attends classes together with his classmates, they can also participate in discussions.

The robots don't just "sit" in classrooms, they can walk around the school and even participate in organized events, according to local education authorities.

It is planned to return children's interest in coming to school by participating in classes through robots.

After the coronavirus pandemic, the number of children missing school has increased. In Kumomoto in 2018, 1,200 children did not come to school, and in 2022, the number of students who will drop out will reach 2,700. In January, assistant teachers were hired to conduct online classes for students who do not come to classes in city schools, which was also warmly received by students.

Kumomoto is not the only city where students do not go to school, in 2022, 244,900 students missed classes for 30 days or more throughout Japan. According to Japan's Ministry of Education, lockdowns during the coronavirus pandemic were the main cause of children's physical and mental problems coming to school.
