A 12-year-old Palestinian boy was reportedly hit by a car while riding his bicycle. As a result of the accident, the child's skull was separated from the upper part of the spine. The boy was immediately taken to the Hadassah Medical Center and immediately admitted to the trauma department for surgery.
Orthopedic specialist Dr. Oad Einav, who led the operation, said the procedure took several hours.
"The child was brought in with what is called internal decapitation, when the skull is separated from the upper vertebrae. "We saved the child through knowledge and the most innovative technologies in the operating room," he says.
The medical team said the child's survival rate was only 50 percent.
"Currently, the child has no neurological deficits, sensory or movement disorders. His body is functioning normally. He is walking without the help of others. This is a rare event, it is not a simple surgery, especially for children and teenagers. It requires knowledge and experience of the surgeon" , said Oad Einav, who led the doctors. The operation was performed in June. But the doctors waited a month to announce the results.
According to the Israeli news agency TPS, the boy's father was with him around the clock during his recovery.
"Thanks to everyone. What saved him was professionalism, technology and quick decision-making by doctors," says the boy's father.
Dr. Mark Siegel, professor of medicine and general practitioner at New York Medical Center, explained why the surgery was so successful.
"Despite the fact that the head was separated from the spine as a result of the injury, the main blood vessels remained intact and continued to supply the brain with blood. That's why we were able to treat it," he says.
