Imprisoned Nobel Laureate Released

Iranian authorities temporarily released Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi from prison on May 10 after her health sharply deteriorated. She has now been transferred to Tehran for medical treatment.

The 54-year-old activist had been serving her sentence in Zanjan. After receiving treatment at a hospital there, the authorities agreed to temporarily suspend her prison term. Reports say Mohammadi was released on bail for a large sum, though the exact amount has not been disclosed.

According to sources, she suffered two heart attacks while in prison. Her relatives said her condition is extremely serious, adding that she has lost a significant amount of weight and is having difficulty speaking.

Mohammadi’s husband, Taghi Rahmani, said her life is in danger and urged authorities not to send her back to prison. Her lawyers also confirmed that her sentence had been suspended for medical treatment.

The activist has long campaigned for women’s rights in Iran and against the death penalty. She was most recently arrested in December 2025. Her children currently live in Paris and have not seen their mother for years.

Her foundation is now calling on the international community to help ensure that Mohammadi does not have to return to prison to serve the remainder of her sentence.
