Hormuz Strait closed: Will the Iran–US ceasefire collapse?

Iran has accused the United States of violating the ceasefire agreement and announced the closure of the strategically important Hormuz Strait. Tehran explained this decision by referring to US strikes on Lebanese territory.

According to reports, a short-term ceasefire had previously been declared between the US and Iran. Under the agreement, tensions in the region were expected to decrease, and maritime routes, particularly through the Hormuz Strait, were to resume normal operations.

However, Iran considered the US strikes on certain targets in Lebanon as a violation of the ceasefire terms. These strikes were reportedly aimed at groups supported by Iran.

Following this, Tehran announced the closure of the Hormuz Strait as a retaliatory measure. A significant portion of the world’s oil passes through this region, so this move could have a serious impact on global energy markets. Donald Trump stated that if Iran does not adhere to the ceasefire terms, airstrikes will resume.

Meanwhile, the situation in Lebanon is also escalating. On April 8, Israel carried out strikes without warning on densely populated commercial and residential areas in central Beirut. As a result, more than 250 people were killed.

Although the US and Iran agreed on a two-week ceasefire, Benjamin Netanyahu stated that this ceasefire does not apply to Lebanon and confirmed that the strikes would continue.
