A severe heatwave in Europe from June 23 to July 2 killed an estimated 2,300 people in 12 cities. A study by Imperial College London found that 1,500 of the deaths were linked to climate change.
Temperatures in Spain topped 40°C, and wildfires raged in France. Scientists said the heat was exacerbating chronic diseases and that official statistics were not fully reflecting these effects. The death toll was estimated based on validated epidemiological models. This June was the hottest on record in Western Europe.
