Approximately 14,000 heat-related deaths were recorded in Germany between April 6 and August 9. Deutsche Welle reported this, citing a study by the Robert Koch Institute. Estimates indicate a rate of 17 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. This is the highest figure in the last decade, and scientists note that the actual number could be even higher. The heatwave most severely affected those over the age of 85, with more than 7,000 deaths recorded in this age group. The heat posed a particular danger to elderly individuals suffering from cardiovascular, pulmonary, and kidney diseases. Experts point out that heat is not always listed as a direct cause on death certificates, suggesting that the number of heat-related deaths may exceed official figures.
