A 28-year-old employee of a plague research institute in Russia's Irkutsk region has died of pneumonia. Following this, nearly 200 people who had been in contact with her were placed under medical observation, and quarantine measures were implemented at several hospitals.
Initial reports linked her death to pneumonic plague; however, Russian officials stated that she died of pneumonia of unknown origin and that the plague pathogen was not detected. There is currently no evidence of a plague outbreak in Russia.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he is monitoring the situation and that the United States is ready to assist Russia in any way possible.
