Hantavirus on cruise ship in the Atlantic: 3 people die
A Dutch cruise ship, the MV Hondius, has tested positive for hantavirus, killing three passengers and infecting several others.
The virus has been confirmed by laboratory tests and is being investigated, the WHO said. One of the patients is in critical condition. The ship is off Cape Verde with about 150 people on board. The infected include citizens of the Netherlands and other countries. Spain has agreed to take the ship, and international organizations are currently taking measures to evacuate passengers and control the situation.
Hantavirus is transmitted by rodents and can cause severe lung and heart failure. There is no specific treatment.
