United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he was "shocked" by the misinterpretation of his speech at the Security Council.

Speaking to reporters on October 25, Guterres stated that he "unequivocally condemned the terrible and unprecedented terrorist attacks committed by Hamas in Israel on October 7" in his speech at the UN Security Council meeting.

However, a quote from the Secretary-General's speech by the UN press service was "misinterpreted." We are talking about the part of Guterres' speech, "Hamas attack did not happen without reason". In it, Guterres points out that the Palestinian people have been "under occupation for 56 years."

"Indeed, I spoke about the sufferings of the Palestinian people and clearly said: 'The grievances of the Palestinian people cannot justify the terrible attacks of Hamas.' Then I continued my presentation with my positions on all aspects of the Middle East crisis. I believe that it was necessary to clarify the situation, especially to respect the victims and their families," the UN chief explained.

At the same time, Guterres stressed that "nothing can justify the deliberate killing, wounding and kidnapping of civilians or the launching of missiles at civilian targets."

Israel called on the UN Secretary General to resign after Guterres's words that "the attack by Hamas did not happen without reason". Permanent Representative of Israel to the UN, Gilad Erdan, said that the country will stop issuing visas to UN staff.
