An international grave-digging competition took place in Hungary, featuring 19 two-person teams—a total of 38 professionals. The event was held on September 5 at a public cemetery in the Hungarian town of Nyergesújfalu. Participants dug the graves using only shovels, hoes, and pickaxes.
The required dimensions for the grave were 1.6 meters deep, 2 meters long, and 0.8 meters wide. Contestants were judged primarily on the speed and quality of their work. Róbert Nagy and László Kiss won the competition by digging the grave in 1 hour and 21 minutes; they shared a prize of 200,000 Hungarian forints (approximately $640).
The aim of the competition was to highlight the challenges of the grave-digging profession and to ease taboos surrounding the subject of death.
