Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan’s iconic artwork “America” — a fully functional toilet made of 101.2 kilograms (223 pounds) of solid gold — is set to go up for auction in November. The piece is estimated to sell for around $10 million. More than just a luxury item, the golden toilet is seen as a satirical commentary on modern society, wealth, and excess.

The artwork was previously displayed at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, where visitors were even allowed to use it. Later, a replica was installed at the historic Blenheim Palace in the UK, from which it was famously stolen — a theft that sparked international headlines. Cattelan wittily remarked that the incident “added new meaning” to the piece.

Now, “America” returns to the spotlight once again, attracting massive interest from art collectors and critics around the world.
