From Dilshod to Dilshoda: Transgender citizens in Uzbekistan allowed to change their names

 

According to a new resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers, now citizens who have changed their gender can apply to change their first name, last name and patronymic (FIO). This requires a medical certificate from a healthcare institution on gender change. Previously, changing the FIO was possible only on the basis of historical and national traditions. Now, gender change can also be a basis.

Also, according to the new regulation, the FIO will be changed in the following cases:

* in accordance with the law on the state language;
* based on a court decision;
* if the name/surname sounds unpleasant;
* does not match the nationality;
* if there is a desire to return to the surname before marriage;
* if family members want to take the same surname;
* if there is a desire to take the surname of the parent or guardian;
* when paternity is established (after 16 years of age);
* when changing gender.
