In the new 2024 press freedom rating published by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), Uzbekistan took 148th place out of 180 countries. The country suddenly dropped 11 places from its place in the 2023 ranking.
As a result, the situation of media freedom in the country has gone from "severe" to "very serious" and censorship, surveillance and self-censorship are widespread.
Norway, Denmark and Sweden are ranked highest in terms of freedom of expression, while Afghanistan, Syria and Eritrea are at the bottom of the 180 countries.
According to the annual World Press Freedom Index, political attacks on press freedom around the world, including arrests of journalists, suppression of independent media and the widespread dissemination of misinformation, have increased significantly in the past year.
Since October 2023, more than 100 Palestinian journalists have been killed in Gaza, including at least 22 in the course of their work.
Also, since the beginning of 2024, 12 journalists have been killed, 544 journalists and 26 media workers have been arrested.
