Former South Korean President Sentenced to 30 Years

Former South Korean President Yun Seok-yol has been sentenced to 30 years in prison in a case related to the sending of drones to Pyongyang. The Guardian reported this. The Seoul Central District Court found him guilty of abuse of power and aiding the enemy. 

According to the investigation, Yun organized the launch of drones over the North Korean capital Pyongyang in October 2024, thereby trying to create the basis for the introduction of martial law in the country. The prosecution noted that the actions of the former president artificially increased tensions on the Korean peninsula and posed a threat to state security. It was also noted that after the drones fell, classified military information was leaked.

Yun Seok-yol denies all charges. His lawyers said that the former president did not order the drone operation. According to the defense, these actions were a response to North Korea's regular launches of balloons loaded with garbage into South Korean territory.

Recall that Yun Seok-yol was sentenced to life imprisonment in February this year on charges of attempting to impose martial law in 2024 and obstructing the work of parliament. The former president was removed from office last year after the Constitutional Court confirmed his impeachment. Later, liberal politician Lee Jae-myong won the early presidential election.
