Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and His Wife Sentenced to 17 Years in Prison

On December 20, a special court in Pakistan sentenced former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to 17 years in prison in a corruption case related to the illegal purchase of state gifts at discounted prices, Reuters reported.

According to the court ruling, 10 years of the sentence were imposed for abuse of trust, while the remaining 7 years were for violations of anti-corruption laws. The couple was also fined a substantial amount. The defense stated that the verdict was issued without properly hearing their arguments.

The case involves luxury watches gifted to Imran Khan by the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia. Prosecutors allege that the gifts were purchased at extremely low prices in violation of state regulations, causing losses of millions of rupees to the national budget.

Imran Khan has been in prison since August 2023 and is currently serving a separate 14-year sentence in another corruption case. It is reported that the new sentence will take effect after the completion of the previous one. Khan and his party have described the cases as politically motivated and announced plans to file an appeal.
