Former mayor of Istanbul Akrom Imamoğlu was imprisoned

Akrom Imamoğlu, the former mayor of Istanbul, Turkey, was found guilty of publicly abusing an official and sentenced to 1 year and 8 months in prison. According to the verdict, there was no restriction on his political activities.

The criminal case was based on anonymous statements made in January 2025 by Imamoglu to Istanbul attorney general Okin Gurlek Shaani. The trial took place at the penal institution in Silivri.

The prosecutor's office had requested 2 years 8 months to 7 years 4 months in prison and a political ban for Imamoglu. However, the court was limited to imprisonment.

Imamoğlu denied the allegations, calling the case the result of political pressure. He was arrested in March 2025 on charges of corruption and involvement in terrorism. Political scientists consider him the main opponent of President Erdoğan.
