The members of the House of Representatives of the US Congress supported the resolution to remove Republican Kevin McCarthy from the post of speaker, writes CNN. 216 chamber members voted for the decision, 210 voted against it. In particular, eight Republicans, led by the initiator of the vote, Matt Getse, supported the resignation of McCarthy. On September 30, McCarthy struck a deal with Democrats to pass a budget resolution to fund 45 days of federal spending, helping to avert a government shutdown. Due to this compromise, Getse demanded the resignation of his party colleague. As noted by CNN, in the history of the United States, the House of Representatives has never fired a speaker based on a resolution. Patrick McHenry, a Republican from North Carolina, has been appointed speaker pro tempore of the lower house of the United States Congress. A similar situation was observed in the US House of Representatives only once - in March 1910, writes The New York Times. During the vote, Republicans tried to impeach Speaker Joseph Cannon, known as "Uncle Joe." He managed to keep his post, but his position in the House was weakened.
