Igiraneze Eme Gerik, a midfielder for second-division club Gepar du Lac, collapsed on the pitch during a match against Amassipiri in Burundi. The footballer died while being taken to hospital.

According to some sources, the player may have accidentally swallowed a coin that he had in his mouth during the game. Other reports link the incident to a “gri-gri” amulet, which in local beliefs is considered a protective charm.

Local customs hold that such talismans are believed to protect their owners from misfortune. However, the exact cause of the player’s death has not yet been officially confirmed.
