Footballer Dies Allegedly Due to an Amulet

Midfielder Igiraneze Eme Gerik of Burundi’s second-division club Gépar du Lac collapsed on the pitch during a match against Amassipiri and died while being transported to the hospital.

Several sources report that the footballer’s death may have been caused by accidentally swallowing a coin during the game. Other sources, however, claim that the incident was related to a magical amulet known as a “gri-gri.”

According to a widely practiced local belief, such amulets are meant to protect their owners from misfortune. However, the official cause of death has not yet been announced.
