Five Ministry of Defense officials have been detained in Kazakhstan in connection with a training exercise in the Caspian Sea that resulted in the deaths of 14 military personnel. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kazakhstan announced this information.
On September 24, during a training exercise on the Caspian coast 43 kilometers from the city of Aktau, 17 military personnel were swept away by strong waves and adverse weather conditions while disembarking from the "Qaysar" patrol boat. Three individuals were rescued, while 14 perished.
Those detained include the Chief of Staff—First Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Kazakh Naval Forces, two military unit commanders, a marine company commander, and the boat's commander.
They are suspected of negligence in the performance of their duties and of violating vessel operation rules, resulting in grave consequences. All five individuals have been officially designated as suspects and placed in a temporary detention facility.
The investigation is examining decisions regarding the organization of the exercises, safety requirements, weather and hydrometeorological conditions, the technical state of the boat, and the actions of the responsible officials. The Ministry of Internal Affairs stated that other suspects could also be identified and detained during the investigation. The investigation into the criminal case is being overseen by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Prosecutor General's Office of Kazakhstan.
