On November 9, a meeting between the presidents of Azerbaijan and Iran took place in Tashkent as part of the Economic Cooperation Organization summit.
As stated in the press service of the President of Azerbaijan, the Iranian President expressed satisfaction with the state of bilateral relations. He also congratulated Azerbaijan on the liberation of Karabakh and expressed Iran’s readiness to participate in the restoration of the liberated territories.
According to Raisi, transport projects between the two countries continue to strengthen.
“The Agband route across the Araz River and the projects agreed upon between us meet the interests of both countries. This ensures Azerbaijan’s connection with Nakhchivan and removes existing concerns,” Raisi said.
“I am confident that our relations, contrary to the wishes of our opponents, are improving and the plans of other countries to spoil our relations will fail,” he continued.
In his response, Ilham Aliyev said that he was glad to meet Raisi and thanked him for his congratulations on the restoration of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.
Aliyev called the project to create transport communications across the Araz River promising. “Due to the fact that Armenia has not fulfilled its obligations to ensure communications between the main part of Azerbaijan and Nakhchivan. It is their choice and they are making a big mistake.
I am glad that we were able to agree on the routes of the railway and road along the southern bank of the Araz River and this project will become part of the North-South transport corridor. We will have two routes: through the Astara River and through Araz,” Aliyev said.
In previous years, extra-regional forces also tried to interfere in the friendly relations between Iran and Azerbaijan. “However, these attempts did not yield results, I am sure that the same will happen now,” Aliyev emphasized.
During the meeting, issues of construction of the Rasht-Astara railway section and cooperation between the two countries in the energy sector and within the framework of international organizations were also touched upon.
