Euthanasia Legalized in Uruguay

On October 15, the Senate of Uruguay passed a law allowing terminally ill patients to end their lives with medical assistance. This practice is no longer considered a crime.

The law applies only to mentally sound adults suffering from incurable diseases and enduring unbearable pain. Euthanasia can only be carried out under medical supervision and is prohibited for minors.

The Catholic Church opposed the decision, calling for the “protection of life.”

Thus, Uruguay became the first country in Latin America to legalize euthanasia.
