European Union Fines Temu €200 Million

The European Union has fined the Chinese popular online shopping platform Temu €200 million.

The fine was imposed because illegal and dangerous products were being sold on the platform, including toys that pose risks to children and faulty charging devices. This was reported by BBC.

According to the European Commission, Temu failed to adequately identify and assess the potential risks its products could pose to consumers. The Commission accused the company of “deficiencies in assessing systemic risks.”

During a “mystery shopper” investigation conducted by an independent organization, many charging devices purchased through Temu were found not to comply with electrical safety standards. In addition, some children’s toys reportedly contained excessive levels of chemicals and small parts that could create choking hazards.

Besides the fine, Temu must submit a plan by August 28 to address the identified shortcomings. After that, the European Commission will review the plan over a two-month period.

European Union Commissioner Henna Virkkunen emphasized that the decision should serve as a “strong signal” for Temu. Meanwhile, Temu stated that it disagrees with the decision and considers the fine disproportionate.

“We are carefully reviewing the European Commission’s decision and considering all available options,” the company said in a statement.

This fine is considered the second-largest penalty imposed under the European Union’s Digital Services Act. Earlier, in December 2025, the social media platform X owned by Elon Musk was also fined €120 million.

Temu’s Activities in Uzbekistan

At the end of 2024, new requirements regarding e-commerce activities came into force in Uzbekistan. According to these rules, international platforms working with users in the country were required to register as legal entities in Uzbekistan.

Since Temu did not fulfill this requirement on time, authorities announced plans to block the platform starting from March 20, 2025. However, on March 18, the company registered as a resident entity in Uzbekistan.

Later, the Tax Committee stated that negotiations with Temu were ongoing on several issues. In March 2026, a representative of the National Agency for Perspective Projects, Kamronbek Muhammadiyev, said that the platform would only be able to resume operations in Uzbekistan if it fully complied with legal requirements.
