The states of the European Union from September 1 completely prohibit the transit of sanctioned goods through Russia to third countries, including Uzbekistan. This was reported by VPostMedia.
Russian logistics and foreign trade companies are said to have received such notice from European counterparties.
The media noted that Russia bought sanctioned goods, including equipment and other mechanical devices, from the Baltic states under the guise of transit to Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.
"West was very well aware of this. About half of the goods shipped by transit to the countries of the Caucasus and Central Asia remained in Russia, the European bank for reconstruction and development even came up with the term ‘Eurasian carousel’ for this,” the media explained.
Strengthening control over transit is provided for in the EU sanctions package 11 against Russia.
The publication notes that now the easiest way to import such products from the European Union to Russia is through Turkey.
However, the country has not allowed the transit of sanctioned products since spring, which indicates the need to transport them through third countries – Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan or Armenia, or through customs clearance and repackaging in Turkey.
Both of these methods are much more expensive and make up 10-40% of the cost of delivery.
"Total exports from Europe and the United States to Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan increased by $ 9.7 billion or 66 percent to $ 24.3 billion in 2022. Exports from these five countries to Russia grew to $ 4.8 billion. This was an increase of nearly 50 percent over 2021 to $ 15 billion,” the Washington Post reported.
