Iranian individuals and legal entities involved in the nuclear and missile programs of the Islamic Republic will continue to be subject to European penalties, the EU statement said.

The European Union decided to maintain the sanctions against Iran because of the violation of the nuclear agreement. This was reported by dpa on Tuesday, October 17. In addition, the sanctions against the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) and the ban on the sale of weapons and missiles are being extended.

The extension of sanctions means that Iranian individuals and legal entities involved in nuclear and missile programs will continue to be subject to punitive measures in the EU The Islamic Republic. The EU statement notes that the decision taken is not related to Tehran's support for the Hamas terrorist group recognized in the EU, which attacked Israel on October 7.

Nuclear Agreement with Iran
In 2015, Iran signed the so-called Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with the so-called "group of six", which included the United States, Russia, China, Great Britain, Germany and France. The plan provided for the gradual lifting of economic sanctions against Iran in exchange for curtailing its nuclear program, but in 2018, the United States, where Donald Trump was then president, announced its withdrawal from the agreement and the resumption of restrictive measures against Iran. Tehran, in turn, began to refuse to comply with the treaty.

Among other things, Iran refuses to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and provide information about uranium enrichment at their nuclear facilities. According to Tehran, the Iranian nuclear program is a complex of scientific and industrial measures for the development of nuclear energy in the country, but the United States and a number of other countries suspect Iran of secret work on the creation of nuclear weapons. Since April 2021, Russia, the United Kingdom, Germany, China, the United States and France have been negotiating with Iran to restore the JCPOA in its original form.

After the conclusion of the agreement in 2015, part of the sanctions were lifted from Iran, but for some of them the deadline was set for October 18, 2023. Now the EU has decided to extend these sanctions, explains dpa.
