Turkey will no longer accept terms and requirements from Brussels to join the European Union, Recep Tayyip Erdogan said during his speech in the Turkish parliament on October 1.
” We have fulfilled all the promises made to the European Union, but they have not fulfilled almost any of their promises, " quotes Erdoğan of the AFP.
Ankara” does not accept any new requirements or conditions in the process of joining the Union, " Erdogan said.
"Turkey no longer expects anything from the European Union, which has been waiting for us at its gate for 40 years,” he added.
"Brussels cannot demand Turkey”
According to Erdoğan, Brussels would no longer have the right to impose political, economic and military demands on Turkey unless the EU rectified “injustices such as the visa regime” on Turkish citizens.
” If the EU intends to complete the Access process that exists only on paper, it is its decision, " Erdoğan said.
Turkey applied for entry into the European Union in 1999. Negotiations to join the alliance, which began in 2005, were suspended at the end of 2016. Reuters noted that for a long time Erdoğan was not interested in activating the accession negotiations, but in 2023 he said that Brussels should open the way for Ankara to join the European Union before the Turkish parliament approves Sweden's application to join NATO.
