In his speech at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan made proposals for reforming the global governance architecture. The politician, in particular, criticized the activities of the UN Security Council. "The Security Council can no longer be a guarantee of international security. On the contrary, it has become a battlefield where the political order of five countries collides," Erdogan said. This influential structure is slow to prevent international political crises, especially in the case of the invasion of Ukraine. The five permanent members of the Council (USA, Great Britain, France, China, Russia) often veto the resolutions proposed by each other, so international initiatives remain unfulfilled. "We must immediately reorganize the governing institutions of the UN system, which are responsible for peace, stability and prosperity in the whole world. We need to build a new global governance architecture that represents representatives of all nations, faiths and cultures in the world," said the Turkish leader. US President Joe Biden also touched on the need to reform the Security Council in his speech at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly. The owner of the White House proposed to increase the number of permanent and temporary members of the Council. UN Secretary General António Guterres also said that the management structures established after the Second World War do not reflect the current reality, therefore, it is necessary to review their activities on a critical basis. In his previous speeches, the President of Turkey assessed the modern format of the UN as unsatisfactory. According to Erdogan, "The world is bigger than five!" In other words, it is unacceptable for the five permanent members of the UN Security Council to solve international problems. In addition, it is not true that the fate of the 8 billion inhabitants of the planet depends on the judgment of five countries. Erdoğan also drew attention to the fact that the UN is unable to solve serious problems in the world in his book entitled "The world can be more fair" (Daha Adil Dünya Mögög) published in 2021. Let us remind you that the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev in his speech at the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly in 2017 spoke about the need to expand the Security Council in accordance with today's requirements.
