Earthquake in Afghanistan: Death toll exceeds 600

A powerful earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale struck eastern Afghanistan near the city of Jalalabad. According to Taliban officials and international media, at least 622 people were killed and more than 1,500 injured in the disaster.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake struck at a depth of 5 km on Sunday night. It was followed by several aftershocks measuring 4.5-5.2.

Experts say the death toll could rise as the quake caused widespread destruction in remote mountainous areas. Rescue efforts are ongoing.
