Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has announced the dissolution of parliament and called for a snap general election to be held on November 29. This move follows parliament's rejection of the government's measures to address the housing crisis and mounting public protests against rising housing costs across the country.
In recent weeks, mass protests against soaring housing and rental prices have taken place in Madrid and other Spanish cities. The demonstrations were partly triggered by the eviction of an 87-year-old woman from her home in Madrid.
The government's proposed measures aimed to restrict the eviction of vulnerable tenants and extend rental contracts; however, parliament did not approve them.
Sánchez hopes to secure broader parliamentary support for his government through the election. The next general election had originally been scheduled for 2027.
