Drunk man hijacks plane and flies toward nuclear power plant

In Hungary, a 24-year-old drunk man without a pilot’s license hijacked a Cessna 172 aircraft and flew toward the Paks Nuclear Power Plant.

The incident occurred on August 29 at an airfield in the city of Kalocsa. After taking off, the young man entered restricted airspace near the Paks Nuclear Power Plant. Two JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets were then scrambled to intercept him.

A few minutes later, the aircraft made an emergency landing in a sunflower field near the village of Keren. The man was not injured.

Even more surprisingly, after getting out of the aircraft, the man also attempted to steal the car of a driver passing by. The driver managed to stop him and called the police.

A subsequent check revealed that the young man was intoxicated. He told police that he did not remember hijacking the plane or flying it at all.

An investigation has been launched into the incident.
