Deadly earthquake in Venezuela: death toll rises to 235

The death toll from a series of powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale that struck Venezuela on June 24 has risen to 235, with at least 1,500 injured.
The capital, Caracas, and the state of La Guaira were the hardest hit. Hundreds of buildings, including hospitals and other essential facilities, were destroyed. Thousands of people were left homeless, and rescue efforts are still underway.
According to officials, about 250 buildings were seriously damaged or collapsed. Power and communications were cut in some areas, and Caracas airport was temporarily closed.
The Venezuelan government is accepting international aid. The United States, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Qatar and other countries have announced that they are sending rescue and humanitarian aid.
