Daniel Radcliffe asks not to compare the new Harry Potter to him

“Dominic will do it better than I did”

Daniel Radcliffe has urged journalists and fans not to put pressure on the young actor cast as Harry Potter in HBO’s upcoming series.

In an interview with ScreenRant, Radcliffe spoke about 13-year-old Dominic McLaughlin, who has been cast as the new Harry Potter. The actor expressed confidence that his young successor would handle the role even better than he did.

“I’m sure Dominic will do it better than I did. I was learning as I went along. Now I look back at what I did with much more warmth and less embarrassment because I’m older. But during the filming of ‘Harry Potter,’ I spent a long time figuring out how to do it,” Radcliffe said.

The 36-year-old actor’s main request was to stop constant comparisons and questioning.

“When these kids were cast, there was a lot of noise online: ‘We need to protect these children!’ If you really feel that way, then maybe don’t keep asking us — me, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint — about them all the time. I don’t want to be some strange ghost in these kids’ lives. Let them figure it out themselves — it will be something new and different,” he added.

Radcliffe also admitted that he has only rewatched the “Harry Potter” films once or twice because he doesn’t enjoy watching himself on screen. However, he is looking forward to showing the new adaptation to his son.

“Maybe I’ll show that to my son so he won’t have to watch me,” he joked. “I think that would be more fun. I’d probably enjoy that more.”

It was previously revealed that Radcliffe wrote a letter to his young colleague after the casting announcement. Dominic McLaughlin later said that receiving support from the original franchise star was “insane” and incredibly exciting.

The HBO “Harry Potter” series is expected to premiere in early 2027. The showrunner is Francesca Gardiner, with several episodes directed by Mark Mylod. J. K. Rowling serves as executive producer.

The main roles will be played by Dominic McLaughlin (Harry Potter), Alastair Stout (Ron Weasley), and Arabella Stanton (Hermione Granger). The series’ music is being composed by Hans Zimmer and his team.
