Couple sentenced to prison for attempting to sell their own child

A court in the city of Fergana sentenced a married couple who attempted to sell their newborn baby.

According to reports, the couple started a family in Kokand in 2024 under a religious (Sharia) marriage. A year later, they had a baby boy. Later, due to financial difficulties and family disagreements, they decided to sell the infant. They planned to use the money to pay off their loans and cover other expenses.

The criminal court found both defendants guilty under Article 135 of the Criminal Code (human trafficking) and sentenced each of them to five years of imprisonment.

In addition, responsibility for the child's protection was assigned to the Kokand City Human Social Protection Agency and the child protection department of the local hokimiyat.
