Cleaner Mistook Art for a Dirty Mirror and Wiped It Away

At the Keelung Art Museum in Taiwan, a volunteer cleaner accidentally destroyed a 40-year-old artwork by contemporary artist Chen Sung-chih, mistaking it for a dirty mirror and wiping it clean with toilet paper.

The piece, titled “Inverted Syntax-16,” featured a dust-covered mirror mounted on a wooden panel, symbolizing time, memory, and cultural identity.

After the cleaner removed the dust that had accumulated over decades, the artwork completely lost its original form. The museum has formally apologized to the artist and announced it would compensate for the damage.

However, some art critics have taken a philosophical view, saying the incident has given the piece “a new meaning.”
