Christmas services held at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral in Tashkent

On the evening of December 24, solemn Christmas services were held at the Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Tashkent. Two Masses took place — at 8:00 p.m. in Russian and at 10:00 p.m. in English. Both were led by Bishop Jerzy Maculewicz of the Tashkent Apostolic Administration.

Security was provided by the National Guard, and an ambulance was on duty nearby. Despite the measures, the atmosphere remained calm and open, with not only Catholics but also representatives of other faiths attending. Between the services, the cathedral choir performed Christmas carols.

After the services, everyone who wished could receive a blessing from the bishop.

For Catholics, preparation for Christmas begins four weeks in advance during Advent. At this time believers fast, read passages from the Bible, and give up habits they consider important, such as sweets, coffee, or social media.

Traditionally, on Christmas Eve Catholics gather for a family dinner with 12 fasting dishes and a main fish course. Before the meal, they share special white Christmas bread called “oplatek,” wishing each other peace and grace.

According to the bishop, the image of Santa Claus is linked to Saint Nicholas, a Christian saint known for secretly helping the needy. Traditionally, gifts are given on St. Nicholas Day, December 6.
