ChatGPT Helped Thieves Locate a Luxury Home in Australia

French nationals used artificial intelligence to identify and burglarize a luxury home in Canberra, Australia, where high-end items were kept. The burglary took place in October 2025. Four intruders broke a window and stole designer jewelry, handbags, and watches from the house. They were arrested a few days later at a fast-food restaurant in Sydney.
According to case documents, the thieves determined the home's address by using photos the victim had posted on social media. Artificial intelligence helped identify that a blooming cherry tree in one of the photos was located in Canberra. Additionally, the thieves used ChatGPT to pinpoint the house's location based on a photo showing a swimming pool and a tennis court. The stolen items were initially valued at $10 million. However, in court, this figure was reduced to $2 million because sufficient documentation verifying the items' authenticity was not provided.
The thieves have fully admitted their guilt. Court proceedings regarding the case are ongoing.
