Charlize Theron responds to Timothée Chalamet’s remarks on ballet and opera

Charlize Theron: “In 10 years, artificial intelligence will replace you.”

Actress Charlize Theron commented on statements made by Timothée Chalamet in March, where he suggested that “no one cares about ballet and opera anymore.”

“Oh my God, I hope I meet him someday. That was a very careless comment about two art forms that we need to keep supporting, because yes, they are going through a difficult time,” Theron said in an interview with The New York Times.

“In 10 years, AI will be able to do what Timothée does, but it will never replace a human dancing live on stage,” she added.

She also defended the art of dance:
“Dance is one of the hardest things I’ve ever done in my life. Dancers are superheroes. Dance taught me discipline. It taught me structure. It taught me hard work. It taught me to be tough,” said Theron.

According to her, due to intense training, she even experienced serious infections multiple times caused by untreated blisters.

Back in March, Chalamet said he wouldn’t want cinemas to share the fate of ballet and opera, which he described as “no longer relevant.” His remarks sparked backlash on social media.

Users commented:
— “When no one remembers Timothée Chalamet, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky will still be creating magic.”
— “Ballet and opera are far more complex to create than cinema,” another user noted.

Chalamet’s words were also criticized by artists from the ballet and opera world, including Andrea Bocelli, Whoopi Goldberg, and ballerina Misty Copeland.
