Changes will be made to the Latin alphabet

The Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis adopted a draft law on improving the Uzbek alphabet based on Latin script and sent it to the Senate. According to the draft law, instead of the current alphabet consisting of 26 letters and 3 letter combinations, a new alphabet of 28 letters and one apostrophe is planned to be introduced. As a result, letter combinations such as “sh,” “ch,” and “ng” will be replaced with separate letters. In addition, the use of some letters will be clarified. During the discussions, deputies proposed to introduce the new alphabet gradually.

According to this, documents, national currency, securities, symbols of state bodies and organizations, signboards and other attributes formalized before the law comes into force will remain valid until the specified period. It was emphasized that this draft law was developed with the participation of scholars of the Institute of Language, Literature and Folklore of the Academy of Sciences.
